Ask any SPD staffer at any hospital with more than one OR. Ask at 0715 any weekday.
Very flawed survey.

I demand to speak with who wrote this article because this is full of lies and discredits the insane stress sterile processing techs endure daily. We are constantly on deadlines that are to save lives! Our daily hazards are covid , hiv/aids, c diff etc. this is not journalism this is defaming the importance of our Peri-operative team!

As someone that has been working in Sterile Processing, I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree with our job being one of the least stressful. The job is incredibly complex, detailed and face paced. You must be able to know thousands of medical instruments and how to properly deconaminate, disinfect and sterilize them at the drop of a hat. If you skip a step or do any part of the process incorrectly, you can cost a patient their lives. You are routinely exposed to the world’s scariest diseases, including COVID-19. You are also exposed to hazardous chemicals for the majority of your shift. Not only do you work with surgical staff, but nearly every department in a hospital, and they are all tell you they need their instruments back as soon as possible. Sterile Processing is constantly dealing with staffing issues, instrument issues and equipment that stops working. Procedures continue nonetheless, and it is a sterile processing technician’s job to ensure everyone has the instruments they need when they need it. Oh, I forgot to mention the 20 trays of vendor instruments that just came in for the case in a few hours. All of those trays must be gone through and reprocessed. Hopefully, the sales rep remembered to bring the IFUs so you know it’s processed correctly. Sure, not stressful at all.

This article is WRONG!! You obviously have no idea what it’s like to get 30 to 40 loaner trays done and turned over for a needy doctor while your short-staffed and it has to be clean and sterilize completely for your patient while the or is calling you every five minutes wondering where their trays are. Every hospital is short-staffed and we’re always working our butts off. This is ridiculous

One of the least stressful jobs ??? Someone needs to come work a little while. People say restaurants Are stressful… it doesn’t touch this profession with a ten foot pole. Been there done that. It’s the center most portion of a hospital… everything comes from this area. This article is a joke. It is one of the most stressful jobs. 1000’s of IFUs are required to do this job. Not to mention the exposure of every blood borne disease , sharps and outrageous turnover time expectations of 1000’s of instruments. All the while maintaining dirty to clean to sterile specifications and guidelines for each of those processes. Yes this article is a joke and a slap in the face to sterile processing technicians.
