1. Make a Meaningful Difference
If you care about people, then you already know how good it feels to help others. And let’s face it, if you want to become a Paramedic, a Patient Transport Officer or a Control Centre Officer, then you probably care about others. With this shared outlook, you’re likely to enjoy a rewarding career with us.
2. An Incredible Career
There are so many career paths available to you here at Ambulance. You could become a Patient Transport Officer, transporting non-emergency patients to hospitals for treatment. Or you might want to consider working in one of our state wide control centres, taking Triple Zero (000) calls. Or perhaps you now stand where thousands of Paramedics once stood before you – at the beginning of an incredible and varied career.
Do you enjoy education and training? Would you like to become a team leader, station manager or even a Director of Operations? Have you considered working in special operations and counter disaster? How about specialising in our aeromedical and medical retrieval division? A career in Ambulance can offer you all of this – and more.
3. An Accessible Career Choice
Think you might like to become a Control Centre Officer in one of our busy Control Centres answering Triple Zero (000) calls? Or perhaps you may be interested in becoming a Patient Transport Officer? Then we’ll train you from day one of your career with us.
And of course, you may want to become a Paramedic. To do this, you can go to university and qualify with either a Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) or a Bachelor of Paramedic Practice. You can read more about these degrees at www.csu.edu.au and www.utas.edu.au
4. Enjoy a Great Lifestyle
Many of our roles are based on a shift roster – but before you turn the page in dismay, our Paramedic and Control Centre shifts, for example, operate on average as four days on, usually followed by four or five days off. So what does this all add up to? A lot of hard work, but a lot of free time for your friends and family as well.
5. Earn as you Learn
If you’re interested in going to uni, the first step is to find out the job requirements from the Ambulance website and speak with our recruitment team. We recruit uni students while they’re still studying and offer them employment. This way, you can get on with your study knowing you have a job waiting for you at the end of your course. We also pay for some of the final year subjects studied at Charles Sturt University under the Accelerated Pathway Program. To find out more, go online at www.csu.edu.au
6. You’re Part of a Team for Life
It’s been said before that Ambulance is like family – we’re always there for each other. Many of our employees share intense life experiences with each other – whether as Paramedics, Patient Transport Officers or in Control Centres. These shared experiences generate a unique bond and a large degree of mutual respect, support and camaraderie that you just won’t find elsewhere.
7. You Never Stop Learning
Whatever your role with Ambulance, you’ll quickly appreciate that we’re passionate about training, to ensure your skills are as relevant as they can be. We also support clear management pathways with our nationally-recognised Ambulance Management Qualification; rolled out in partnership with the Australian Institute of Management (AIM).
8. We’re Here to Support You
Working at Ambulance won’t offer you a run-of-themill office job – that’s why so many people are drawn to our organisation. The flip side of this is that you may find yourself responding to highly emotional and often confronting incidents. This is where you need to lean on us a little, or specifically, on our broad and comprehensive range of staff support services.
9. Our Careers Grow with You
It’s not unusual to hear our staff say they’ve been with us for 20, 30 or even 45 years! Having a career in Ambulance can be like having 10 or more different careers over the course of a lifetime, with each career path suited to your current interests and work/life balance requirements. Perhaps Extended Care Paramedic, Lauren Cowgill best sums this up. “A career in Ambulance gives me a great work/ life balance,” says Lauren. “I enjoy the opportunity to pursue other interests such as travel and sport. Ambulance allows me to do that, while also developing my career. I’m only 29, but I already feel I’ve been able to explore so many avenues within Ambulance and I’m excited about all the other opportunities open to me in the future.”
10. You will make some Lifelong Friends
Given the type of work we do, it’s inevitable that close friendships will form with those people you work with. Intensive Care Paramedic, Craig Watkins joined Ambulance 11 years ago and reflects on the friendships he’s made over the years. “After 11 years I still love what I do. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some amazing people and I get to work with some of my best friends.” This job doesn’t end when your shift finishes – the friendships you make will carry on over the course of a lifetime.
