The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has released the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ending on March 22, 2023. The SPI is used to assess the price movement of essential commodities on a weekly basis to review the price situation in the country. It comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of Pakistan.
The weekly SPI for the current week ended on March 22, 2023, recorded an increase of 1.80%. The major increase was observed in the prices of food items, including tomatoes, wheat flour, potatoes, bananas, tea Lipton, pulse mash, tea prepared, and Gur. Non-food items like Georgette, Lawn, and Long Cloth also saw an increase in prices. On the other hand, a decrease was observed in the prices of chicken, chillies powdered, LPG, mustard oil and garlic, pulse gram and onions, vegetable ghee 1 Kg, cooking oil 5 litre, pulse moong, pulse masoor, and eggs. Out of 51 items, the prices of 26 items increased, 12 items decreased, and 13 items remained stable during the week.
The year on year trend depicts an increase of 46.65% in prices, with onions seeing the highest increase of 228.28%, followed by cigarettes, wheat flour, gas charges for Q1, diesel, tea Lipton, bananas, rice Irri-6/9, rice Basmati broken, petrol, eggs, pulse moong, potatoes, and pulse mash. However, a decrease was observed in the price of chillies powdered by 9.56%.
The current week over previous week (WoW) showed a 1.80% change, with major increases seen in food items like tomatoes, wheat flour, and potatoes. The major decreases were observed in chicken and chillies powdered.
The current week over corresponding week (YoY) showed a 46.65% change, with major increases seen in food items like onions, rice Basmati broken, cigarettes, wheat flour, gas charges for Q1, diesel, tea Lipton, bananas, rice IRRI-6/9, eggs, pulse moong, potatoes, and pulse mash. The major decrease was observed in the price of chillies powdered.
